I came across Elisa’s story via Detelar Amuzga, a beautiful collective of Amuzgo artisans in the state of Guerrero. Detelar Amuzga posted photos of Elisa’s mother creating a gorgeous shawl to raffle out at roughly $4.97 each ‘ticket’ to help raise money for Elisa’s treatment (not only the actual treatment itself, but medications, travel to the clinic, and other expenses related to her care). I have included an approximate breakdown (provided by Detelar Amuzga) of Elisa’s expenses:
Medication: approximately $1,300 Mexican pesos p/ month
Travel: approximately $700 Mexican pesos p/ doctor’s visit (can be several in one month), and it’s 5-6 hrs from their home in Xochistlahuaca.
3 month’s worth of expenses comes out to approximately $4,000 pesos ($200 USD)
6 month’s worth of expenses comes out to approximately $8,000 pesos ($400 USD)
