::: Rio Grande Valley :::

Midwest, USA

Becca Vasquez is a Chicana weaver currently residing in the Midwest. Her current work focuses predominantly on handwoven earrings made with: naturally colored non-dyed wool & cotton, commercially dyed yarn, hand-dyed yarn, yarn hand-dyed using botanical/insect dyes, and thrifted yarn.

Becca started to weave as a way of reconnecting with ancestral fibers such as ixtle (specifically from maguey fiber), yucca, cotton and wool, as well as botanical/insect hand-dyeing processes. For her, weaving is a way of honoring all her grandmothers, great grandmothers and great great grandmothers with ties to the U.S-Mexico Borderlands in the Río Grande Valley of south Texas, and San Luis Potosí, Nuevo León & Tamaulipas, Mexico

LANMOU DESIGNS

::: Jacmel, Haiti :::

New York, USA

My name is Ludwine Auguste I was born and raised in Haiti. I've been living in the USA for 15 years now. I currently live in New York. I try to represent my culture, and the beauty of my country as best as I can in all of my creations. From the people to the breathtaking nature, to the house I grew up in, and so on.

I grew up in the southeast of Haiti in a town called Jacmel.

One of the many happy moments of my life in Jacmel as a kid was during carnival, or KANAVAL - also the name of my IN SITU collection. Jacmel is known for its carnival. People would travel from all over Haiti and the diaspora to Jacmel for carnival. I remember waking up early to sneak into the atelier near our house to watch people make the carnival masks and costumes. Made of paper mache, the carnival masks were (still are) of wild animals that I've only seen on tv, to imaginary creatures, to political figures. In my little kid eyes, they were huge, they were colorful, they were elaborate. Some were also scary to me but still very fascinating. This is why this collection of earrings is bigger than what I usually make. They are about 3 inches. These earrings are made of wood and individually hand-painted, with stainless steel posts. Don't let the size intimidate you. They are super lightweight.

Working on these designs might be the most fun and more fulfilling thing I've worked on so far. This was truly a work of love.

Thank you.

DEER SPRING BEADS

::: Diné :::

Tuba City, AZ

Ya'at'ééh! ("Hello" in Diné language).

My name is Kay & I am a Diné (Navajo) woman from Tuba City, AZ. As Diné people, we are born with 4 clans and my first clan is Bįįh bitoodnii, which in English translates to Deer Spring People. This is where my creative page's name is from. I began beading when I was about 10 years old with my grandparents. However, I took a long break, but recently started back up when I was pregnant with my daughter. This was during the start of the COVID pandemic and when quarantine first began. I took out my old bead stash and started making some earrings to keep me busy. Then, I decided to create an Instagram page where I could show others my work * to my surprise, people were interested.

Beading, especially during these times, has taught me how to be patient & has been an escape for me. When I am beading, I make sure that I am in good spirits, because I like good energy to be woven into my beadwork. I am a fairly simple person & I feel like that is represented in my work; I do not use a plethora of colors in work. I also do not plan my work before I begin because I think that my best work comes as I bead. I will generally pour out 2 or 3 colors of beads on my beading tray and just start beading. As I go, sometimes I will add new stuff in or take out something out. I just go with the flow and let the earrings make themselves. I bead for enjoyment. :)

Ahé'hee'!

Thank you for viewing my work.
